  1. I want to pursue an architectural career. Ever since i was a young boy I’ve loved art, and anything that can express an art. I would draw and paint whenever I felt something would inspire me. How ever, I did not enjoy taking strictly art classes, because I was graded on an assignment that they wanted me to create, and I felt that if I was to go into a strictly art career, my creative freedom would be taken away for the rest of my life. I kept searching for something that would allow me to create something I would find inspiring and also inspire others. One day the idea came to me, life is not for ever, but art can be, and so I thought about what art stands even after thousands or hundreds of years. I concluded with architecture, with structures such as the coliseum, the pyramids, etc. I wanted to in that moment to create art and functionality that would outlive me. An art that could be visited, admired, and used by many generations past me. I also dream to reinvent a career, and within a strict art career there isn’t too much room to create something new, however architecture has so much to explore and an incredible arrange of freedoms to create and build. To put it simply, the sky is the limit. A building or house could be created from anything, an airplane wing, in the middle of a dessert, an island, anywhere. It is versatile and a perfect way for me to express my art through functionality and creativity.

    T2K Day 1

When going out of my comfort zone I often have mixed feelings of intimidation and excitement. Officially starting college definitely triggers these emotions. Some intimidating factors I have are just being in a whole new atmosphere surrounded by people and places im not familiar with. With the right guidance and mindset I’m sure the adjustment will run smoothly. The real trouble I am going to have to face is balancing an intense major (Industrial Design), Lacrosse, and a social life. Many people including my future professors and my future coach have explained to me that balancing these will be very difficult but they say it is very possible if you put the work in. I'm going to try my best to stay regimented and chase my dream without letting go of the things I love to do. I'm going to study and practice hard with the idea in mind that school work does come first.
On the other hand I am very excited for this fall. I believe I am most productive when I am by myself without anyone telling me what to do and when to do it. I think college will help me be independant and prepare me for years to come. The creative atmosphere at Kean is very inviting and makes me feel like this is truly my home. The hunger to learn, experience new things, and have a good time makes the excitement outweigh the fear of coming to school. Im looking forward to see where this takes me.

  3. The career path I have always wanted to pursue was architecture. To me architecture is the best way to bring ideas from mind to paper or computer. Ever since I was a little kid I always had this way of imagining these crazy designs that I think could work and be used in new buildings today. Drawing is also one of my favorite things to do in my off time so to incorporate that into my career and doing it daily would be really neat. Also living in New York City and being exposed to new and old forms of architecture at every corner inspired me to become the person who creates it all. My favorite building isn’t in New York believe it or not it’s the Petronas towers in Malaysia. I feel like this career path suites me best so this is why I chose the go to school for it. I want to learn all the skills needed to be the best architect I can be after college. This career path excites me to want to work and create in the most imaginative ways an architect can think. The pay is not to bad either I must say. One day though I really want to create my own house with cool innovations that fit my lavish and luxurious life style well. I feel like it would be cool to have my own name on things and to have a legacy that represents me and style. I like to be bold and powerful and that’s architect I want to be also.

  4. As a young boy, I have always loved art. Drawing was one of my many talents that separated me from my childhood friends. As I started to grow, I realized that I wanted to use my artwork to create something that will impact the life of others positively. I first wanted to become an artist, but the thought about it then faded because I knew it would not impact the world as much as I want. Years went by and I was yet to find a field that can incorporate my love of art while giving me the opportunity to impact others for years to come, so I gave up. I then looked into becoming a real estate agent, but I constantly questioned myself, "why would you wake up everyday to sell houses that was created by others?" I refused to let myself give up on something I've always wanted to do since my diaper days. Around sixth or seventh grade, I started looking into architecture and immediately, I feel in love. I found a field that I could use my artwork to design buildings, bridges, houses, etc. that would impact the lives of others for years to come and on top of that, the starting pay was not so bad. Entering high school, I registered for design classes such as Auto-Cad. Auto-Cad helped better my understanding for Architecture and also helped when it came to designing on the computer or simply planning and working with groups of people to finish a project. Architecture is something I would love to do for the rest of my life because not only would I love designing artwork that will mean something to others, but I one day wish to design and build my own house from scratch.

  5. One aspect of college that is most intimidating, especially for me, is the transition to Kean University from my hometown. Throughout my life, I have never moved from one town to another; I have always remained stagnant. I never had to worry about moving because my mother did not want me to go through her experiences, since she moved frequently in her childhood. My mother refused to let me make new friends every year or so due to constant moves. Therefore, when I had to move to Kean University, because I was housing in a dorm, I was very scared of the unknown. To move into a dorm was one thing, but to also make new friends, learn my surroundings, and remember my classes, seemed very frustrating. The idea of having to move from one way of living to another is heavily intimidating, and for the longest time I believed that it would be very difficult for me to make this change. However, even with the intimidation of transferring into a new chapter of my life, my passion for my major in architecture has made been very exciting. For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for building and designing. During my childhood, I used Lego blocks to make houses and skyscrapers. In addition, when I reached adolescence, I traded building blocks for conceptual sketches. Architecture is everywhere you look, and ever since I was young I have wanted to partake in this experience. When I discovered that Kean University had an architecture major, I was eager to learn lessons of the topic that I have been passionate about my entire life. Although the transition is intimidating, I am still determined and enthusiastic about learning a major that I am devoted to.

  6. The aspect of college that is most intimidating to me is making new friends. This is due to the fact that I have trouble placing myself in social situations. I am also shy and introverted. I am sure that as time passes and after many encounters with social situations that I will be able to be at least a bit more extroverted to connect with other people. There of course will be other situations/changes that I will have to face and conquer; but I feel like I can adapt and be able to handle things outside of social situations better. Although I do have this intimidation I am really looking forward going into school to start learning both industrial design. The reasons are quite simple but impactful to me personally. I love industrial design because I get to learn about many things. I want to make a product which people can use to help better their life or lifestyle. Also, by making lots of connections worldwide to sell my product throughout the whole world to help people achieve happiness. I thought of something to create to help out people whom are depressed, with anxiety, or lots of stress. This way I would be helping getting rid of these things with my product. I am already fluent in two languages and I am familiar with many but I am looking forward to learn a few more languages to be able to communicate with others in other countries. I also mentioned music previously due to the fact that music has helped me through so many things throughout my life. Music is the one thing that’s always been there even when I was at my worst moments thus far. So this is why I want to learn music at Kean; to compose music and to improve my singing and instrument playing. With the music I compose I will heal all of the broken souls of the world… if they listen of course; to touch people’s feelings and make them feel whatever the composer was feeling. One last thing is that music is the language of the world. I think that is beautiful. So if one combines design and music one gets the most magical and inspiring things in this world.

  7. Architecture has always been something I wanted to pursue as a career. I believe it combines the strongest aspects of my personality; the ability to work with others, my enthusiasm for designing, and the keenness to solve problems. Growing up, I have experienced architecture through travel from different cultures and places. I would often wonder and think to myself how such buildings could be made and how beautifully designed the interiors were. Most importantly, going to museums such as the Guggenheim museum made me realize how the simplicity in some objects can go a long way in architecture. I was fascinated by the structures, foundations, and designs within each building prompting me to learn more about it. In high school, I got a little background about how architecture really works. I started off with basic technical drawings. Then, I got to work with different computer programs such as AutoCad, Revit. I also started learning about different types of houses and immediately knew it was what I wanted to do. I want to be able to meet people's standards and create their "dream house" as well as creating my own dream house. With architecture, there is no limit and its nothing but your own ideas and creativity that can go a long way. The idea of being an architect excites me and I know it is a job I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life. It will be a passion i will develop and a new lifestyle I would love having.

  8. Hello, my name is Khalil Felder and I am a humanitarian, environmentalist, buddhist, and a soldier in the U.S. Army reserves. I am currently a student at Kean University and plan to obtain my bachelor’s in Graphic Design. After college I want to apply for a job at Google and continue to serve in the military as an active duty soldier for 20 years.
Growing up in the slums of Jersey City everyday life consisted of poverty, gangs, and gun violence. Everywhere you looked there were drug dealers on street corners and junkies looking for the next high. My world view was limited to my surroundings, pushing me to seek independence and go out and explore the world. My sole reason to go to college was to escape the life I was living but I didn’t know how I was going to do it.
In high school I got a job as a Teen Life Intern at New City Kids. New City Kids is a non- profit christian based organization and their audience were the at-risk youth of Jersey City. Working there served as an escape and was the beginning of my life. At work the adults pushed the teens academically, professionally, and spiritually building us into leaders. We were taken on professional visits, college tours, offered tutoring sessions and were given mentors to keep us on the right track. Because of New City Kids I finally found my purpose to attend college plan to use my degree to make a positive impact on the world.
After graduating high school and leaving New City I joined to army as a means to pay for college and decided I would make the best of it. College being my sole reason for joining I’ve become dedicated to excelling not only as a student but also a soldier. After going through basic training and AIT I learned to love both military and civilian life and finally found a life worth pursuing. In college I plan to apply for the Green to Gold program to graduate as an officer and then re-enlist as an MP and finish my 20 years as military intelligence. Through the army I plan to better myself physically, mentally, and professionally and I want to use my time in the military and my degree to become a public figure, serving as a role model for the youth of the future.

  9. The career path I have decided to choose is that of an Interior Designer. I chose this path so that I can create an environment that goes beyond a person’s imagination and expectations. With this career I hope to start a charity or foundation that renovates or even build group homes, homeless shelters, women shelters, orphanages, etc… so that all those who go into those buildings have a comfortable place to rest their heads at the end of the day. It is my firm belief that every human being has the right to a home or at the very least a roof over their heads. I want to design the interiors of those buildings in a way that provides enough space for everyone while making sure they are comfortable with proper facilities to their aid. I am a firm believer that every human being has the right to a home, or at least a roof over their heads. Those who do not have enough money for this economy are left out on the streets to fend for themselves. Men, women, and children are crammed in buildings that aren’t properly supplied to support the amount of people desperate to be in them just to have a place to sleep. As much as I adore art, and as much as I love letting my creativity flow freely without restriction, I believe there is no better way to use these gifts than for the benefits of others.

  10. When making the switch from high school to college there are many factors that intimidate me. Most obvious of all is staying away from home for so long and not knowing anyone here. Of course coming from a huge school I do know some people but no one that I was ever close too or talked to a lot. This scares me because I have no one that I know will be there from me, no secure person in my close proximity. Also I am nervous about my long walk to the Micheal Graves College in the upcoming winter months where it could be pouring rain out and I'd have to walk fifteen minutes to get to class. I never use umbrellas but I think I may need to start to stay dry. The last thing I am intimidated by is the added work load and the harder and longer classes. In high school we take classes for 42 minutes for 6 hours a day and then go home at 2:30. Here at college we take classes at random times during the day and classes can range from an hour five hours. Although the classes are longer I feel that I will enjoy it because they are on something I am highly passionate about.

  11. Starting off my college education here at Kean University is imitating, but at the same time, I am very excited about all of the challenges that will be thrown my way. Maybe that's just my pride speaking, but we will never know. From a glance, I feel that the college workload and class style will not be hard to transition into since I have already taken courses through a community college during high school. But on the other hand, having all courses at a college level will definitely be a step up in difficulty and of course stress. I find this intimidating because I am one who does not deal well with loads of stress. Besides all of the stress, I will be going through on a regular at college, I am still very excited about the classes I will be taking. College is where you are pursuing a career so you take courses that will prepare you for it. Taking all of my design courses is very exciting, not only because they set me up for my future career, but also fuel my passion. Being able to study and learn topics, ideas, and concepts that align with my passion will allow for a more prosperous college experience. This is because I tend to grow more in my studies when I am learning about things that interest me. Another thing that excites me about my future college experience, is being able to study in China. I have always loved learning and appreciating different cultures, along with the idea of traveling to other countries. Being able to learn and grow in an environment that is different from where I grew up in Newark, NJ, is very beneficial not only for me as a student but also as a person. Knowing that I have this option to study in China gives me unexplainable excitement. Overall, I expect there to be crazy stressful times in college where I will question what the heck I am doing here, but at the end of the day, college is a time for growth and exploration, and I am very excited to start off my journey here at Kean University.

One aspect of college that is intimidating for me is time. Throughout my school years, time did not seem to be such a fear as I am experiencing now in college. This was realized after taking my summer courses and registering for a full college semester. During high school I was always able to get assignments completed on time and sometimes even earlier than the due date.
Since I have registered for classes I have realized how full my schedule is, and it gets me tremendously nervous on how will I get assignments done with such little time. During this college transition and conversations with other school peers and professors, I have been told that the field of architecture is one of the hardest majors. Getting to know some of the architecture students from the years before they have expressed that l will be spending indefinite hours in the studio which has caused my intimidation of the career. However, even though I came across this intimidation, I have realized that I have been living under this stressful schedule throughout my school years without even noticing it. Once my thoughts have came together and came to this realization it has made me less stressful and intimidated. One aspect of my college education that I am excited about to know and learn more about the architecture field and to learn more about hands on drawing, hand sketching, hand drawing and modeling in real mock ups instead of creating it all the time in a 3D computer model. Knowing this, it really excites me to know that I am taking the steps of becoming an architect which has been my dream career.

  13. For most freshman, college is extremely intimidating and sometimes downright scary. I am no exception. College is more confusing and much bigger than high school ever was. I didn’t even know where my class was this morning. I’m not used to being unfamiliar with my surroundings so when I am it gives me anxiety. Eventually I will figure out my way around but until then college will continue to intimidate me.
Other than not knowing my way around, I don’t have many friends on campus. I have a few of acquaintances and a couple of friends in different majors; but I really don’t have any friends in my field. Making new friends isn’t a problem for me since I’ve always been very charismatic. However, I am going to miss the comfort of having people I know in my classes.
Not only is it bigger and more confusing, but it’s more dangerous. The amount of disgusting things that happen on and around college campuses each year can send chills down the spines of the most fearless people. Anything can happen at any moment and that puts me on guard.
As for what excites me, well the list goes on. I’m excited to learn about Illustrator and different programs. I have absolutely no experience in those fields since I’ve been drawing my whole life. I’m excited to do an internship and not only learn but experience my field. I am especially interested in the China Campus considering the only place that I’ve been to outside of the country is Dominican Republic. I know going to Rome will be a life changing experience.
Ironically, having to meet new people excites me as well. I love being introduced to new personalities and energies. I can get along with any type of person. I feel different people add a variety of characteristics to my personality. I am a product of everyone I’ve ever met.

  14. Speeches are the number one thing I can't do. Talking in front of a group of peers or teachers is the most intimidating thing in the world to me, and in college that's the new norm. Although I've had experience in speaking to people in large groups, those experiences weren't the greatest to look back on. Honestly, I don't know how I was able to reach college with my level of shyness. It's kind of like a miracle for me to even be here. However, since I am here, might as well make the most of it.
When thinking about the intimidation of college, there are quite a few that come to mind: speaking in front of people, getting along with classmates, talking with your professors, and most importantly asking for help when you need it. It's hard finding what you need in a campus as large as this one, I don't know if I'll ever learn the ropes around here but I sure plan on trying at least.

The most exciting thing about my education here would be the projects and events that happen here on campus. As a graphic design major, I've always wonder what kind of projects the professors will give to there students and the expectation they have for there work. Designing, to me, is probably the highlight of my education here at Kean. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the lessons here and find out what I really am capable of doing in this field not to mention the fun events here on campus. I'm pleasantly pleased to know that there are tons of kids here who hold a million events with a million things happening all at the same time.

  15. Over the next four years, my goal is to pursue a career in interior design. Coming to Kean, I was very excited as well as overwhelmed with all of the numerous great things that Kean has to offer. Starting college this week will be a big change, and for sure a huge adjustment to make. Being surrounded by new people and places is surely an intimidating factor of the college experience. For any freshman, college is a new experience that comes with much more responsibility and hard work than experienced ever before. With a strong mindset and determination to succeed, I could not be more excited to learn about and take in all of the opportunities that Kean has to offer. Although adjusting to the college environment will take some time, what I am most excited for as a Freshman at Kean is the huge range of opportunity the interior design program has to offer. As an upperclassman I hope to study abroad in Italy and get the chance to study design in another country that I’ve always wanted to travel to. With New York City only a train ride away, I am surely looking forward to going into the city this year for class trips and to explore the beautiful city. Overall, I am most excited about the classes I will soon be taking at Kean. Meeting some of the professors and students here at Kean, every one of them has the drive to succeed and always something positive to say about the program. I could not be more excited for hands on learning not only inside but outside of the classroom.

    Transition to Kean (T2k)
    August 27th 2018

For the next four-five years at kean university I am excited to say that I will study in Architecture Studies. How did I come to this conclusion? All my life I had a passion for art, It was almost as if I had a natural talent; literally.

I have been drawing, sketching, painting and many more ever since I was as young as I can remember. Most of my family, peers, teachers and counselors were surprised in my fine ability to draw due to my diagnosis of legally blindness in grade three. With a vision 20-200 and no depth perception it was amazing how much detail I could draw and how I literally got the ideas from my head down on paper. I had a lot of experience and great opportunity with my art all throughout my life. In third great I was placed into gifted and talented art up until the eighth grade, in addition to being enrolled into regular art classes. Through my elementary school and middle school years my art was displayed at our local mall. By the time I was approaching the end of the eighth grade, it was the time to start brainstorming what it was that I wanted to pursue in life. That way when it comes to high-school I can plan my classes accordingly.

in that moment I knew I loved art I wanted to incorporate that in my career still. With my mom being a realtor I always had in interest for the many homes that I got to visit and always had Idea for a new renovation or layout for them. I would even study/observe the different styles or techniques that was used to build different homes. So I then had an easy fix, I choose to major in Architecture.

In highschool I still kept on with taking many art classes. I took visual arts my freshmen year, portfolio preparatory my sophomore year, Advanced placement studio art my junior/senior year and learned a lot in those courses. I took Architecture CAD 1 and 2 my freshman and sophomore year of highschool. I took Interior and graphic design my senior year as well. With still having a passion for architecture I made sure of in addition to taking Architecture courses during the time of my highschool career. I also wanted to stay well rounded in the arts. I feel like Architecture is all about the arts, creativity and spectacular ideas that are able to come to life.

So again you ask, why did I choose Architecture? Architecture allows me to use my creative mind everyday. I also want make a client of mine happy to see their dream home come to life as well as my own.

    Thank you. Kayla fils-Aime

  17. College is a very challenging time in anybody life and I find the most intimidating part is being new. New adjustments need to be made as well as a new community to learn and understand. I end up thinking about new ways to fit in and be myself at the same time. Everybody knows there going to be stress involved and finding ways to cope with it is going be different for others. I myself don’t stress very much except when it came to actually applying for college and counselors breathing down my neck about where I wanted to go. Stress is okay, it part of being new and it won’t last forever and comfort follows. What I’m most excited about is learning what architecture truly is because I don’t know exactly what I’m going to expect going into this field. Architecture is still new to me and exploring it as well as learning from it, be it mistakes and or success is what I’m planning to do here at Kean University. Also, I’m equally looking forward to internships which will help further my career and it' great that Kean University helps with them. Internships can provide much needed experience and help me to get my feet wet early. I had an AutoCAD class in high school which got me interested in architecture, where I learned to draw objects to scale and later implementing them in CAD and now I’m just looking to learn new techniques to increase my repertoire.

  18. My main goal is to have a purpose in life. Being an innovator, artist and designer means we are the brains with the creativity that can leave marks on this world. That is the true purpose of our jobs. It is to create and design a world for the people around us. From buildings to Logos. It surrounds our daily life's and I believe being a graphic designer helps provide an outlet to show my very artistic side. I have always enjoyed art and drawing. The day I learned how to hold a pencil was the day I knew I had a gift. I had a passion for designing and creating. It is something I truly love to do. The saying "When yo do something you truly love you will never work a day in your life is true." I want to live by those words, I want to pursue graphic design because I want to have a job that isn't a job because designing is not work to me. It is an outlet for my creativity that I am truly grateful for.

  19. There comes a time where a young adult has to decide what to do with their future by taking a major step in their life. Most highschool graduates take action by continuing their education through college to achieve an occupation of their choosing. This process for incoming freshman may be frightening since they may not be used to make choices on their own. One aspect of my future college life that I find most intimidating is advancing to college courses and being on top of all my assignments. I’ve been told many times by friends or family that college can have fun experiences or moments at times, however the workload is more difficult and time consuming. I fear that homework, projects, tests, or any tasks may intervene with my regular day to day life because of the painstaking work that I have to do in order to complete each one. I just hope that the work given by professors are not too overwhelming. Although I have certain suspicions of my future college education, two things I look forward to is enjoying the campus life of Kean University and the making relationships with the students and faculty. I am most excited about this because of the fact that campus-goers and staff have shared and displayed friendly behavior. Also, the campus of Kean is very breathtaking, there are many aspects that expresses a good environment, such as the greenery, buildings, and the protection provided by security, and it is a dry-campus as well. I look forward to enjoy my future years at Kean University, but I also have to bare in mind that I must be diligent to be successful.

  20. Drawing gave me a feeling that took me out of this world where it was just me and a pencil. It relaxed and soothed me. I could be drawing and forget about my surroundings. I’ll be hypnotized in a state of non-stop until I have accomplished my work. Seeing what was once a blank canvas turn into what my own brain imagined is satisfaction at its greatest. Art has become my best campion, my therapist, and most importantly it has become who I am now. Creating art in any way is definitely what I want to do for the rest of my life, and what better way of doing that than by pursuing a career in Architecture.

Architecture is intriguing for me because there is so much more to it than just designs. I look at houses and I see a home ready to be filled with loving memories of a caring family. I see skyscrapers and I see the magnificent way the buildings caress the atmosphere above. I see structures with a story that has to be told. I love the cultural aspect that lies behind them; the Japanese, Italian, Spanish, or roman background. There’s the ancient, modern and futuristic feel to any structure ones sees. I want to one day be the reason memories are being made in homes, I want to one day walk around New York City and see my building standing tall amongst all the other great structures created by man. I’m beyond excited to be starting my future here at kean.
