Write and type one electronic journal entry (250-500 words) as a comment to this post. This is due 11:59pm tonight (Friday).
It will be graded on its timely completion and spelling/grammatical format, but not on
specific content. The topic choices are (pick one):
i. What does #yolo mean to you?
ii. Besides an education, what do you hope to gain from college?
Several colleges have many opportunities for students of all types of backgrounds. The main reason that people attend college is that people are interested in learning more about different careers and want to have an advantage in life. While education is my main reason for attending Kean University, I would hope to gain more from my college experience. Firstly, I would like to work on my networking skills in order to help me professionally and personally. Although I have spoken to people before and have made great connections, I would like to expand on this in my future. Kean University is one of the most diverse schools in New Jersey, which leads to many people from many different backgrounds. By living on campus, taking classes, and joining organizations, I hope to further my networking abilities and create greater bonds between fellow colleagues. Secondly, I would like to become more outgoing and make new friends with many different people. From elementary school to high school, I have had small groups of friends and from this point, I would like to make many more friends in the future. Finally, outside of the educational aspect, I would hope to join many organizations and become more involved in my community. I have always been interested in helping people and being involved in my community. Therefore, with the surplus of activities on campus, I hope to join many volunteer services and to expand my mind by becoming enlightened by the community. Even though my main purpose for college is academics, I am sure that I will have great potential in other parts of my life on campus.

The saying “YOLO” is an acronym for “you only live once”. Many people use the saying in everyday life, for instance, when adding extra bacon on a panini, YOLO! I personally do not use the saying out loud but the saying does have some value to me. It's often easy to let the thoughts of others affect the way you act. People often hold back who they truly are or sacrifice things that genuinely make them happy because of the fear of what others think. I think “YOLO” can be used in a sense of that you only live once and you are going to do whatever pleases you in this life.
Another way I abide by “YOLO” is when there is something that I am scared to do but know that the outcome will benefit me. Decision making can be hard sometimes and you can let your thoughts about negative outcomes consume you. If you just stay calm and think to yourself, you only live once so just do it, you could be surprised and how relieved you feel afterwards. Letting go and just living can be rewarding. I personally feel that the things that make me most nervous to do have the best reward after I accomplish them. Whether it is jumping off a cliff into water or even going to a party with unfamiliar faces, the feeling after just going for it will make you happy that you didn’t pass up the chance.
Yolo was a popular term a couple years ago and it means you only live once. It is an Acronym that impacted many people when it was viral. You only live once to me is a slogan that means live life to the fullest because you only get to do it once. Living life to the fullest is doing everything you wish to do and them some. For example completing your bucket list and checking off everything that someone might have on their to do list. Life is a fragile thing that can easily be messed up or ruined. The people that take advantage of life are the ones who are living to the fullest. Everyone should take advantage of every opportunity to do something because you never know when that chance will come again, and if you miss out you are going against the yolo term to me. Us living in the land of the free can really live out the you only live once term more then anyone else probably so we should. We are a free people all with very distinct and different lives that should be lived to the fillies potential because we can not come back once it has ended.

The phrase “Yolo” has a plethora of meaning. To many it might just mean to party hard, and “live it up”. To me it means a completely different thing. Though I still consider partying and having fun with friends is essential to living my best life I think there is much more to it. “Every man is alive, but not every man truly lives” is one the most influential quotes that I live by. The beauty of this concept is that is subjective, and there technically isn’t a true wrong answer. To me it means to dedicate my life to make myself happy. To make me happy, I have to make others happy. Essentially my goal in life is to be a change to the world. I want to help the less fortunate and I want to influence others into being better versions of them. I want to make my parents proud and I want to be successful. I want to be successful in both personal and professional lives. I want to be financially stable, so that later on I can have a family and provide everything for them, and I want to flourish with my relationships. I want to create life long friends and be in a beautiful and caring relationship. I want to travel with friends and a significant other. I want to know the world we are in, and learn where I can help the world. I want to improve our lives, and our environment. To me, to “only live once” means making the most of my only life to improve every other, by making mine the best possible.

ReplyDelete“Kean University: World Class Education”. These words are what lured me into the school, alongside the interior design program at the Michael Graves College located inside the beautiful Green Lane building. But what else do I have to look forward to during my next four years here besides the “World Class Education”? What else can Kean University or simply college itself have to offer? What is there for me to gain? The answer: experience. I’ve grown up living in the same state my entire life. Coming all the way to New Jersey is an entirely new thing in itself. I’ve left Maryland hundreds of times before for vacation and track meets, but, I have never left to practically live and learn in an entirely different environment. By being an out of state student, I am left to consistently rely on my own independence. I can’t simply take a quick trip home if I forget something or want my laundry done or even for a home cooked meal. I love my family but 3 ½ hours is a long drive down, and to come right back means 7 hours on the road and simply do not have the funds to make that trip every weekend. But besides being independent, I hope to gain the ability to grow and become more confident as a person. To step out of my comfort zone and meet new people, hopefully make some good friends ( if I’m not too shy), and try new things. To make memories that will last me a life time. I hope to gain experience in my field so that when I leave I can find work and be ready the big world ahead of me. In my four years here at Kean University, I hope to gain the ability to become the person I desire to be in my bright and brilliant future.
Besides education I hope to be able to gain self sufficiency. I want to be able to become my own person who can buy a car ad anything else i need without my parents having to help. College is the first time in my life where i'm moving away from home and living on my own, but i'm not really like self sufficient yet. My parents are still paying for my tuition and room and board, and i'm too broke to do anything about that right now. But in the next four years I can figure out how to manage my time to ensure im getting all my work done in an efficient manner so I can maximize the amount of work I can get done to make the most money I can. Also I want to be able to find who I am, I know that sound very stereotypical, but it something I need to figure out to keep myself happy for the rest of my life. I hope to get myself involved in many different clubs and activities on campus that might really interest me and some just kinda so that I can find what i'm truly interested in. College is an amazing time to do this because the clubs and organizations are easily available to me and no other time in my life will I be able to join a forensic psychology club. I also really need to gain significantly better communication and writing skills, as you probably have seen in the last 5 blog entries, im not a good writer and I need to be able to write, at least, a grammatically correct email to a co worker or, to my boss or a future employer.
ReplyDeleteI plan to take advantage of Kean and the many opportunities the school has to offer in order to study abroad, build my network, develop myself professionally, become a lieutenant, and most importantly get the 4 year experience. Attending Kean has become a stepping stone in achieving my goals and becoming successful. Right now, my time here is the chance to map out my life and build myself. As I work towards my degree I will strive to become more productive, effective, and hardworking, in order to be eligible for scholarships and internships. By the time I graduate I want to be able to face whatever challenges life has to throw at me.
ReplyDeleteThrough Kean I plan to apply for their green-to-gold program in order to become an officer and further my career in the army. I want to use Kean to develop myself and build my energy in order to give back to the world. I decided to attend college because even though it may not be the most important thing in the world, it will definitely play a huge role in how successful I will be. I want to be wealthy enough to give my kids the opportunities I never had growing up and teach them about life. I want to make a positive impact on the world and play a part in the economy by creating jobs that will one day help the growth of the planet and the nation.
Today, due to the high exposure of information, anxiety and depression rates have been the highest they’ve ever been. I hope to use graphic design as a way to change the way we think as a society. We’re constantly battered with images of the “American dream” but in reality it’s unrealistic and unhealthy. After watching the video on diversity I realized the we as a people forget that we have an easy life as Americans. Our culture has become blind to this because of the media. I hope to someday use my degree and time in service to be apart of something bigger than myself in order to have a positive impact on the world.

Me writing this journal entry only repeating the words “You only live once. YOLO!” is me putting #yolo into effect in my life.
ReplyDeletePeople go to college for many things. Some go to get away from family, some go for the parties, and others go for the experience. Besides education, I intend on obtaining long term lessons and knowledge that would help and guide me for the rest of my life. I intend on making great and successful long term friends. College teaches many things, it teaches about self dependency, time management, and gives you the experience of a lifetime. I intend on learning how to depend on myself, because after college, it’ll be my turn to get out and do things for myself rather than depend on my family or friends. Time management in college is a necessity, if you don’t learn how to manage your time wisely, you will not make it far. I intend on learning how to utilize my time wisely. Making time for my work and time for myself. College comes with many experiences. Studying architecture, I have the choice of studying abroad in China for a semester. That’s a once in a lifetime experience, giving me the chance to experience many cultural differences around the world. I also intend on discovering and finding my true self. As a young adult, I am still maturing and learning and having been under my parents’ wings for so long, it’s time to go out the world and find out who I really am. Choosing Kean University not only gave me the chance to pursue my degree, but it also gave me a chance to experience the amount diverse cultures around campus. Apart from education, I intend on learning and growing on my own while experiencing many things that college has to offer.

ReplyDeleteWhat does Yo;o mean to you me
August 31st 2018
The phrase Y.O.L.O literally means you only live once , this acronym has a different meaning for everyone. This phrase is actually one of my life life mottos; knowing that each individual on this earth has one life to live and in that life they have the access to achieve all their dreams and more is so empowering.
Of course there is a limit to thinking “skies are the limit” because you only live once. As a human in society as an individual you do want to make good choices. We want to keep a good balance of living a health, financially frugal and a goal setting life as you live it. The way I look at it is when I work hard at something such as a project, completing a to do list or even slightly changing my schedule. I think to myself can you afford to do this? Then I reflect on what I’ve done so far. If I made progress I’m like “you only live once go far it”. For example this past summer I took a math courses at Kean University and worked extremely hard during my summer in order to pass the class. One day after seeing a tutor for a few hours I left In confidence that I understood the material. I happen to pass by starbucks cafe and was contemplating whether or not to get a caramel iced coffee ( aka sugar drink filled with cream) I said to myself it is thursday you deserve, you worked hard when studying to no end, you only live once.
Another way I think of the phrase of you only live once is when I imagine my future. Meaning post college education or even for my masters. I have always dreamt of living in California one day. The thought of being in heaven is so beautiful. Palm trees everywhere, living in Los Angeles I see myself settling down in California meeting my soulmate and raising a family. I actually wanted to attend college in California but my vision shifted it is a better option to stay in-state right now. But I mentioned this to say that I did have doubts of going across the country to follow my dreams when the mass majority of my family is on the east coast. The other side of me is telling myself “ to do it “ your life is yours, you only live once. Don’t hold back your passion and dreams for others and what they may feel. Now I have a changed heart to stay in state attend kean University for four/five years then move to Cali pursue my masters over there and compromise my dreams.
This is a the prime factor of :”you only live once”, live your best life: your way. In life we as humans should shape our lives the way we want to. Why? Reason being is because every person is set in this world for a reason and should lives their life the way they dreamt it to be.

ReplyDeleteThe literal meaning of the saying “yolo” means “you only live once”. This was a popular saying a few years ago for younger teenagers. I myself don’t particularly say “yolo” often but the saying itself does have a lot of meaning. What exactly does “yolo” really mean. When I think of this saying I think of it as living your life to the fullest. The fact of the matter is, you really do only live once. That being said, every minute of every moment counts. You could really just think about it like this: no matter what we’re doing or why were doing it either way, you only live once and you should take every chance you get. Whenever I’m unsure of something whether it’s the right or wrong choice or if I’m just slightly on the edge about it, I sit back and think of a saying like yolo. If I’m ever in a situation where I’m unsure but I know it can only affect me positively, the facts are there, you really do only live once you might as well take the chance and run with it. To me living your best life is not wanting and wishing for what you think you might want or need. Living my best life is taking all that I have and making the best of it and taking nothing for granted. Overall the meaning of “yolo” or “you only live once” to me means living your life to the fullest, taking every chance you have while you can, living in the moment, and living your fully best life for yourself.

ReplyDeleteBesides getting an education from Kean University, I hope I gain a lot of memories. Gaining these memories would be participating in events that are runned by the school, therefore I would be able to interact with the school and my peers. I would also like to make new long and lasting friendships. I am excited to know that Kean offers study abroad. Knowing this I would hope to gain memories by going to China for a semester and also going to Rome for another semester. If I would be able to go to another place that Kean offers I hope I would be able to gain that experience. I have always traveled to Portugal but I have always fantasized traveling the world. Coming to Kean University it is making a step closer to my dream. Going to these countries I hope that I will be able to gain my networking because it gives me one step closer to my dream career as an architect. Starting to gain my networking I hope I become close to my professors so they are always there for when I need a reference or need help to get a job. I would like to also gain experience by joining multiple clubs throughout my years attending Kean University. Participating in these clubs would give me the college experience everyone always talks about having. I would also like to become more familiar and aware about my surroundings, because I came from another state I am still getting used to things. I also would like to learn how to manage time in a orderly manner so that I could fit in the thing I would like to do. I hope that I will have an amazing time attending Kean University and also have be able to gain that “college experience”.
Okay so for the last Journal of this class and for the journal with my favorite number; I decided to write about what I hope to gain from college besides an education. So besides an education I hope to get work skills that I need when I get out into the workforce after I graduate. I also hope to gain a few new friends I don’t expect a lot of new friends but if I do get a lot of new friends that would be a plus. I wish to gain communications skills to be able to talk to people. It is the ability to talk fluent sentences and ways to get to know a person well. I also wish to gain a healthier lifestyle. Also to learn how to manage my time more efficiently. I wish to gain these skills and knowledge because I believe they are the things that will help me survive and also to divide and conquer in the professional world. I would love to also not only have time to be strict and professional. I want to have time to have fun. For me, college is going to be a wonderful time to truly discover who I am and also to learn how to fend for myself since I am going to be dorming. I already know how to mostly live on my own but I just have never been alone. I know I might get homesick. I also be a bit hard doing things for myself but I believe I will be successful in the end. College will be an amazing adventure for me and for many and it will also be very hard but I can guarantee everyone will get through it… and so will I.
ReplyDeleteI’m looking forward to my college life even if I’m not getting the full experience without dorming. Besides an education, I’m hoping to get life lessons as well as life experiences and lifelong connections. The life lessons I’m hoping to get will help me to reflect on everything I’ve learned before because it will help to change my stubborn lifestyle. Not that being stubborn is bad because that what helped me to get into this university. I was recommended to go to other colleges for architecture like Steven institute as well as rowan University and even NJIT. I stuck to my guns because I loved the look of school and the community. Life lessons help to change your view and leads you to looking at things differently, like maybe its prospective. I’m looking forward to my new life experience because I’ve just becoming an adult and I’m still in need to learn about the world, be it financially or truths that eluded me as a child with little knowledge. An experience I’m looking forward to would be internships because that’s where I’ll learn the most about an architect career and what I’m to expect while taking this class in college. With these internships I’ll naturally and gradually grow connections over time. Life is just a series of connections being made and the more people know and meet and the more your name gets out there the more people want you to work with them. My college experiences are going to pave the way of my life.
ReplyDeleteThroughout history, there have been many generations that have created slang or new terms that would be used by society during the time, if it caught on and the utilization of the word had spread. In our generation, society continues to make new words or terms that are recognized through social media and become more popular, resulting in them becoming actually words in the dictionary. For example, the word selfie has been added to the dictionary an is a made up word that is the action of using a front-facing camera on a smartphone to take a picture. The term “yolo” can be translated to, you only live once. This acronym originated from rap artist Drake from his song yolo. The word is to be used in specific situations where you only have one chance to do something, also another purpose of the word is to get an activity or opportunity out of the way while you are at a young age so you may not regret it in the future. In my understanding, Yolo is a way for a person to experience a certain moment in their life without hesitating. I would use yolo on things that appear adventurous, such as, skydiving, bungee jumping, or even parasailing, because even though these activities seem risky, it would be a memorable time to complete them. However, there are some people that overuse this phrase and also use it for the wrong instances. Some people are quick to say yolo without thinking and end up getting hurt or injured because they have not thought about the consequences. Overall, the are good times and bad times to use yolo, but you have to make sure you know which choices are right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteMy goal in college is to have as much fun as i can. I want to really get my money’s worth in college. Like i don’t want to look back 10-20 years from now saying “oh in college all i did was study or i didn’t have fun.” I definitely just don’t want to regret my time here because my parents worked really hard to get me here today.Another goal i have is to really grow in regards to becoming an industrial designer. I hope to get better at my craft and to only take off from there. I also hope to not rush into everything, and just slow down and enjoy every little thing because i know 4 years goes by really really fast. Over all what i hope to gain the most is good memories. Ones where i can laugh and look back and say “yeah i remember doing something like that in college.” Also, to just really have a good time and really enjoy myself, as much as i can. Maybe even find a girlfriend or future wife. Besides these things i don’t think there is anything else i could possibly gain.

ReplyDeleteT2K Day 5 Journal
When hip hop meets the everyday life we get lyrics and saying that catch and become a trend. When Drake released the song “The Motto” in 2011 the whole world started saying yolo. Yolo means you only live once and has since then died out, but the saying is still relevant to this day. In life we are given opportunities to do amazing things that scare us at first but will excite us after. For example, some people have fears of roller coasters or heights but they will never know if they really are scared of heights unless the go to somewhere high or skydive and get the rush. If people don’t live their life to the fullest now in their prime they will be left with regret in the later years because of a fear of something they have never tried. Now I know what you are thinking, David, aren’t you the most picky eater out there and don’t know what you are missing out on? My answer to that is yes, I am. However I am getting better with my eating habits because I am realizing that life is too short to not try everything. Also, life is way too short to just stay in one place, town, state, or even country! We all only live once and only have one opportunity to experience everything around us and experience other cultures. In conclusion, #yolo means to live your best life while you still can.
In these four short years of college, I hope to gain the confidence to be proud of my work and how I did it. In high school, I was always comparing my artwork to others, whether it was consciously or not. it always bothered me how someone else's artwork could look so amazing and how mine would still have this dullness that I could never stop making. Honestly this side of me is just my way of telling myself to stop thinking that I could do art and find something else to do. After all, as amazing as an artist's life can be, If your not good at what you're doing, It's kind of pointless in doing it, that's my opinion anyway. However, I wish to change this way of thinking. If I can't do that, I don't think my time here at Michael Graves College will be spent well. I want a well rounded education as well as the experience and confidence to always be certain of my actions, to not hesitate when I'm told no. Having these things after college is important to me. I know the type of person I am, I know what my weaknesses are and where my strengths lay and even if I try my best at something I hate, I know I'm never going to do great compare to someone who actually loves what they are doing, that's why I'm determined to learn more about what kind of person I want to build by the end of these four short years at Kean University. My goal is to become a different person after my four years here. I want to be able to change myself and gain the essential necessities I'll need in the real world.
ReplyDeleteDuring my four years of college, I hope to get more than just an education. I hope to become more independent because I know once I leave college, I will be on my own probably starting my career or something related to it. That being said, my goal is to become more independent and responsible during college that way I won't have to struggle as much while leaving college. I also want to make more memories. We all have memories from our past and have memories from each school whether it be middle school or high school. I want to be able to look back at college and remember it as my best times. I also want to make connections with many other people. I want to see myself grow and be able to manage my time, while still working and still attending and being involved in the school. Finding out who I am and what my interests are would be things that will become very useful to me. I strive to do many things during these four years and I know college will help me prioritize and manage my time well enough to make these goals happen. I believe that the things I experience in college will be lessons I will use for the rest of my life. I know I will learn many life lessons along the way and I am excited to start this journey.

ReplyDeleteDuring my four years of college at Kean University my main goal is to graduate with a degree and do something I love for the rest of my life. Besides the main fact that I want to gain a high class education I want to be more involved, social and make new friends. College means starting off fresh. We will be meeting new people and learning more about ourselves. I hope to make many new long time friends that are trustworthy, funny and very social. I also want to be more social and interact with my professors. I believe that being social is very important especially when it comes to making connections in the real world. Talking to important people can get you the right connections and internships and that is something I truly want to better myself in. I also want to learn to be more responsible. College can be very overwhelming but if you are organized and now how to keep track of you time everything will fall into place. I would also like to learn how to maintain a job, school and a social life all at the same time. I want to make many memories during my four years at college. I want to look back at my time and not regret a thing. I want to have fun, be more sociable and be on task when it comes to my grades and school. College is a learning experience and I am ready to learn about myself on this very long memorable journey.
You only live once is a motto that says one simple idea but has so much more meaning in the minds of our generation. Every person has a different way of living and interpreting this motto. For many it’s being wild, and reckless. For me it’s facing my fears that will turn into the very reason why living is breathtaking. I stand by this quote “The best things in life are on the other side of terror”. How can one say they have lived if they never stepped outside their comfort zone. Feeling all that adrenaline rush through your body, feeling your heart pound like crazy, and getting that nervous feeling in your gut is how I know and feel that I’m living. It’s that feeling right before you jump out of a plane. It’s stepping outside and taking in that fresh air. It’s seeing the world that was created for us. Now a days it gets ripped out of our hands by technologys addictive control. You only live once for me means that if one day I were to be taken allway I would be satisfied with what I have accomplished. I do not want regret the life I lived I want to leave this world with accomplished goals.
